OSCE Chairperson-in-Office: “What happened in Nagorno-Karabakh made abundantly clear the risks inherent when conflicts remain unresolved”

"Situation in Europe today is very different from Swedish Chair in 1992," said the new OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde while revealing her countries priorities as chair, ONA reports.

According to her, new conflicts, crises, and threats have emerged, from climate change to cybersecurity, pandemics: "The importance of our organization and our commitments does, however, remain intact. Sweden is convinced that multilateral cooperation is the best way to address our common challenges. It is with this mindset and experience that we take on the task of leading the OSCE for the coming year.

I will do my part in order to OSCE’s being able to make real changes, to defend its principles. I will do it as a conscientious mediator, representing all participant countries, and I will not avoid revealing violation of our generally-agreed principles.”

A. Linde said in her speech that the main priority of Sweden during its chairmanship to the OSCE in 2021 is contributing to the resolution of regional conflicts: “Threats, caused by conflicts for international peace and security, are unacceptable. The resolution of conflicts in our region makes up the basis of our agenda. Supporting comprehensive security conception, we will try to solve conflicts, avoid future crises. Political and economic security, human rights, democracy, rule of law, equality – all of these are in connection with one another.

Conflict resolution is a strong priority for Sweden to chair the OSCE. The armed conflict in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, heavy human casualties, human suffering clearly revealed the risks that arise when conflicts are not resolved” noted Swedish Foreign Minister.

OSCE Chairman-in-Office added that the conflict has not yet been resolved and in this case, OSCE can still give its contribution to the conflict resolution: “We will support the OSCE Minsk Group and the personal representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office”.

A.Linde has touched on other issues in the OSCE region and noted the importance of the solution of these issues in the framework of international law.

"My role as chairman now will be to support and enable steps that can increase confidence and security. I will not create any obstacles during this period.  We talk about our commitments, security, and OSCE,” said A. Linde.
