MFA: Negotiation process should not be hostage of the situation on the frontline

“Not understanding Azerbaijan foreign minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s words and not taking appropriate results reaffirm the idea that the Armenian side is looking for excuses for avoiding the negotiation process”, said Spokesperson of Azerbaijani MFA Leyla Abdulayeva told ONA

“Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, answering questions from media representatives following the Washington meeting, said: negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan as parties to the conflict, be it on the Madrid principles, their updated version, Kazan principles or the so-called“ Lavrov plan ”, accompanied by flashes of tension on the line of contact. However, substantive intensive dialogue continued. That is, the negotiation process should not become a hostage to the situation on the front line. Not understanding this and not extracting the proper results from what has been said once again confirms the idea of the Armenian side searching for excuses in order to avoid advancing the negotiation process,” L. Abdullayeva noted.

“We remind that the cause of tension on the front line is the illegal presence of the Armenian armed forces on the territory of Azerbaijan. And in order to put an end to this tension, it is necessary to advance the negotiation process to resolve substantive issues; and nothing else! According to the logic of the Armenian side, during the period of relative calm in the frontline zone, provided on the basis of mutual agreement reached after the meeting in Dushanbe, we had to achieve concrete results in the negotiations. However, everything is obviously wrong. A party interested in a peaceful settlement of the conflict should not look for excuses for avoiding concrete result-oriented negotiations, but, on the contrary, should demonstrate political will and determination. This is exactly what our expectations from the Armenian side and the hopes of the international community consist in, ”L. Abdullayeva stressed.
