Minister clarified reasons of not signing final declaration of Eastern Partnership summit

“The question regarding the protest of Azerbaijan to the declaration that was planned to be signed at the end of summit on 10th anniversary of Eastern partnership should be addressed to the EU leadership and Romania which chairs the organization”, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov at the 1st panel discussion titled “Achievements and Challenges in Delivering Concrete Results to Citizens” of a high-level conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership Program, ONA reports.

Minister stated that the project of the declaration was not satisfactory for Azerbaijan: “I am sure it was not only for Azerbaijan but was the same for other member states. After extended discussions, especially after the discussion on the importance of emphasizing the commitment to the statements adopted at the previous summits we decided that this statement was not sufficient for us. Especially if we talk about principles indicated at the Helsinki Final Act and UN Charter… It was decided that High Commissioner would make a final statement without reference to the delegations of Eastern Partnership countries”.
