1,2 million of Azerbaijani population are refugees and internally displaced people, ONA reports.
“According to the official statistics, 1,2 million or 12,4% of the Azerbaijani population are refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs). Even if every 122 people of the world is a refugee and IDP, in Azerbaijan every 8 individual lives a life of refugee and IDP”, said Tahir Budagov, Chairman of the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan at the meeting with Guido Ambroso, Country Representative of UNHCR in Azerbaijan.
According to him, international and internal migration processes are directly related to the refugees and IDPs. Tahir Budagov stated that taking into account the data on refugees and internally and forcefully displaced people from their homes is a very important issue. Demand on processing social-economic and other statistic indicators about this group of the population has emerged after Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
The Chairman of the Committee said that Azerbaijanis, who were forced to flee from their historical lands as a result of the conflict, are constantly surrounded by state care, and great works are done in order to improve living conditions and to solve the problems of refugees and IDPs every year.
Tahir Budagov has also given detailed information about the preparation works about the next population census that will be held in Azerbaijan on October 1-10.
He said that statistical information about refugees and IDPs has been obtained by the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan since 1990. Beside administrative information, statistical data about refugees and IDPs are obtained during population census, as well.
