Azerbaijan's Justice Minister: “Nearly 2,300 prisoners were released on parole during pandemic”

“Issues of implementation of justice have also kept in focus during the global pandemic, a special program module has been prepared and started to be applied in order to hold court processes in video format, at the same time significant changes have been made on legislation on the initiative of the head of state in order to provide review of criminal cases through video-relation", Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov, ONA reports.

He said that protective of lives and health of prisoners and accused persons have seriously been kept under control, most of the prisoners over 65, who are included in risky group due to virus have been released with the pardon Order of head of state as a manifestation of humanist policy:

“Nearly 2300 prisoners were early released on parole or transferred to a light regime facility. While 740 persons were released from prison as a result of home arrest or other alternative arrest measures.”

According to the new legislation on humanization of penal policy, more than 2.000 prisoners were completely released from punishment, more than 3,200 prisoners have had their sentences reduced, as well as numerous prisoners from foreign states have been handed over to their countries by following quarantine regime.
