“There are cases of violence against children in Azerbaijan too. Their reasons are clear”, Commissioner for Human rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of the Azerbaijan, Elmira Suleymanova said in the Conference dedicated “Prevention of Violence against Children”, ONA reports.
According to her, one of the reasons is weaker parent control in refugee families: “Marriage at early ages is also a reason. Other reason is domestic violence; it covers the whole world and is observed in Azerbaijan too. Main reason of violence against children is multiple divorces. Certainly, there are conflicts and tough treatment in these families. Children both see them, and are subjected to violence.”
Ombudsman stressed that facts, given in the Internet, and journalists’ extremely covering violence affects the issue.
She noted that children’s being subjected to such violence is a psychological trauma: “It affects their physical and mental development, causes severe psychological stress. At the same time, sometimes women give births at early ages. Although these cases are few, they are observed in Azerbaijan too. These children are physically and mentally-disabled. All of these affect children.”
