UN Secretary-General: "At best, vaccine will be found in 9 months, while at worst virus will spread again"

In an article for Aftonbladet, UN Secretary-General António Guterres talked about two possible scenarios in the world in connection with the pandemic of the coronavirus infection COVID-19, ONA reports citing Tellerreport.

According to him, there is an optimistic and pessimistic forecast.

According to the first scenario, all countries, including developing ones, will successfully cope with the current situation, and within nine months a coronavirus vaccine will be developed, which will be available to everyone.

“If this happens, and the economy will gradually recover, we will begin to move in the right direction, so that after two or three years to some extent, return to normal,” said Guterres.

If the worst-case scenario is realized, the spread of coronavirus infection will continue, which will negatively affect the situation in developing countries, he said.

At the same time, only the most developed countries can get the vaccine from COVID-19 against the background of fierce competition.

“If this scenario comes true, we will see how segregation, populism and xenophobia grow. Each country will act independently - or in the so-called coalitions that want to cooperate only on certain specific tasks, ”the UN Secretary-General warned.

According to Guterres, this could lead the world to global depression for five to seven years.

He added that it is not yet clear which scenario the world is heading for.

Guterres previously admitted the possibility of a global food disaster.

The Executive Director of the UN World Food Program, David Beasley, also warned of the threat of mass starvation due to the coronavirus pandemic if humanity does not ensure food security.
