Works underway for including mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan in UNESCO World Heritage List

"There are more than 300 mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan. Not all countries have such nature objects. Most mud volcanoes of the region are in Azerbaijan", said Arzu Samadova, Deputy Chief of Biodiversity Protection Service at the "Expert hour" program on official Facebook of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, ONA reports.

According to him, there are volcanoes in the country that are protected under the status of natural reserve: "And natural reserve is a territory being under serious protection. But there are also the mud volcanoes that are not a part of territory of the natural reserve. It is possible to go and see those mud volcanoes by complying with the safety rules".

A. Samadova said currently the works are being conducted for giving the geological park status to the mud volcanoes and including those geological parks in the UNESCO World Heritage List: "The regulations of the geological parks were approved in the last year. The geological tourism will be developed on those volcanoes after obtaining of geological park status. People will be able to go and see those volcanoes and to receive information about those volcanoes from a tour guide”.
