“I know people read about chess. Now I am writing about the saddest story of the year,” one of the strongest chess players of the world Sergey Karyakin’s Galiya Karyakina said, ONA reports.
Galina Karyakina spoke about the European champion while she was commenting on the traditional Shamkir Chess 2019 super tournament dedicated to the late grandmaster of Azerbaijan Vugar Hashimov:
“Azerbaijan’s Shamkir city has hosted the memorial tournament of Vugar Hashimov for six years. Vugar Hashimov was a legendary Azerbaijani chess player. He was a member of the national team and winner of a lot of tournaments. I did not have the chance to meet with him. I talked with him via Skype once. He was a close friend of my husband Sergey.”
Note that after the first five rounds of the tournament held in Shamkir, the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen became the leader with 3.5 points.
