Azerbaijani community in Moscow appeals Russian Prosecutor General for security of journalist who wrote about Sumgait events

Shamil Taghiyev, chairman of the Azerbaijani community in Moscow has appealed to Prosecutor General of Russia Igor Krasnov for ensuring the security of employee of 'Nezavisimaya Gazeta  Lev Askerov, ONA’s Moscow bureau reports.

The appeals read that Lev Askerov's article titled "Sumgait Tragedy: How it started and how it was" based on archival documents of the KGB of the USSR,' was published in the 'Nezavisimaya Gazeta of Russia in 1988, on the occasion of the anniversary of Sumgait events.

According to the appeal that an article based solely on archival documents and witness testimony noted that Sumgait events were the result of large-scale prearranged provocation by Armenian nationalists and Armenian lobby in Soviet secret services.

It has been noted that real reasons of Sumgait events have been covered in Russian media clearly and substantially for the first time in 32 years, names of perpetrators of such inhumane provocation against Azerbaijanis and Armenian population of Sumgait city have been sounded.

Attention has been drawn to the book of investigator for especially important cases at the Prosecutor General of former USSR Vladimir Ivanovich Kalinichenko, who investigated Sumgait events, entitled “First-hand information about Sumgait events” in the appeal.

Russian General Prosecutor has been asked to take under control the journalist’s security and prevent provocations by representatives of Armenian and diplomatic corps in Russia against L. Asgarov.

Remind that article of Lev Asgarov, entitled “Sumgait Tragedy: How it started and how it was”, based on archival materials of the USSR State Security Commission was published on Nezavisimaya Gazeta on the eve of the anniversary of Sumgait events 1988. Armenia’s Ambassador to Russia Vardan Toghanyan appealed to the Russian General Prosecutor’s Office and required L. Asgarov’s punishment. Its reason was his article, published on Russia’s famous Nezavisimaya Gazeta and dealt with Sumgait events 1988.
