Power failure in Argentina and Uruguay has been 'partially remedied'

The power outage that ensured that all of Argentina and Uruguay ran out of electricity on Sunday was "partially remedied," said Argentinian President Mauricio Macri on Sunday evening, APA reports citing Tellerreports.

The power outage that ensured that all of Argentina and Uruguay ran out of electricity on Sunday was "partially remedied," said Argentinian President Mauricio Macri on Sunday evening.

According to him, half of Argentinian households now have power again. He called the failure "unparalleled" and promised a thorough investigation of the cause.

In Uruguay, the power supply was restored Sunday evening in 75 percent of the country, the responsible utility company UTE reported.

Parts of Brazil, Chile and Paraguay also suffered a power outage on Sunday. Whether the problems have been resolved there is not yet known.

It is not yet clear what caused the massive power outage. Because of the outage, since Sunday morning at 7:06 a.m. (local time), around 55 million households in South America were without power.

The disruption coincided with elections in several Argentine states. There, voters had to cast their vote by candlelight or use mobile phone lights, according to local media.

Companies and aid institutions had to use emergency power without electricity. Trains came to a standstill, traffic lights went out, gas stations did not work and there were no more subways in the big cities.
